The Cadden Family Vineyard is a pristine, sustainably farmed 6 acre vineyard planted in 2007 in the North Eastern corner of the Napa Valley appellation, situated on a subtle south facing slope at 800 ft. elevation. There is one dedicated acre of Malbec on the property, planted in rocky clay loam soil.
2015 was our inaugural vintage of Malbec. With very little insight as to what we could expect from this varietal and the potential for wine greatness from this vineyard, we decided to take a gamble on this beloved varietal and produce a second red wine from the property.
The Malbec was harvested at the crack of dawn on August 21st by our misfit crew of pickers. The grapes sat in a small vessel at the winery, macerating for a short period of time, allowing the dark skin color of these blueberry size grapes to seep into the juice before being transferred into French oak barrels for 18 months of aging prior to bottling on April 5th, 2017.
From our first barrel sample tasting we realized we had hit the jackpot. The visual and aromatic components of the 2015 Malbec are a stand-alone experience on their own. Dark purple with violet hues along the edge of the glass are noteworthy, as is the bouquet of boysenberry preserves and roses that induce a smile, a sense of curiosity and anticipation. On the palate, the wine is generous, broad and supple, with ripe mixed dark berries and a touch of clove and vanilla. 37 cases were produced.
